Speaking the word to the eyes as well as the ear

The Lord Be With You:
A Visual Manual for Presiding in Christian Worship

Charles D. Hackett and Don E. Saliers, O.S.L.

This is the perfect pairing of the liturgical text with the gestures appropriate to expressing their power. Avoiding the often difficult task of communicating ceremony and manual acts with words alone, The Lord Be With You through vivid photographs, presents clear examples for the practitioner and the student alike.
Already used as a standard textbook in many several seminaries, this book follows the common texts of the United Methodist (Book of Worship) and Episcopal (Book of Common Prayer) books for services of Word and Table, Services of the Baptismal Covenant, Weddings, Funerals and the Pastoral Offices in a step-by-step manner providing a number of models for using body language and ceremonial which is at once contemporary and grounded in Biblical theology.

“If seminarians and clergy read this book and internalized its understandings of worship, the quality of Sunday mornings in American churches would improve dramatically.”
—LEONEL L. MITCHELL Seabury-Western Theological Seminary

CHARLES D. HACKETT is Director of Episcopal Studies at Candler School of Theology, Emory University, where he is Assistant Professor of Church Ministries and teaches in the areas of worship, hermeneutics and theology.

DON E. SALIERS, O.S.L., a United Methodist, is Professor of Theology and Worship at Candler. A widely-respected writer in the field, his books include Worship and Spirituality, Handbook of the Christian Year and The Soul in Paraphrase.

Timothy J. Crouch, O.S.L.,
Nancy Bryan Crouch, O.S.L.,
Chris E. Visminas, and
Mark R. Babb, O.S.L.

Born out of the frustration of trying to juggle multiple resources for liturgical planning, this book brings together all the basic elements for ensuring continuity and thematic wholeness to the worship of the congregation each week and holy day.

Based on the Revised Common Lectionary (1992), each volume contains resources for 72 possible services for the liturgical year. Each service’s section includes a summary of the lessons and the psalm. Propers include a Greeting, Collect and General Prayer for the Day which lift up the themes of the texts. Also, an antiphon based on a familiar hymn tune is provided.

The collection is completed by a piece of original line art which illustrates the gospel theme for the day. Copyright permission is given to reproduce the art as a bulletin cover and to include the psalm response in the bulletin. Templates are provided to assist in laying out the weekly service for copy machine.

“Some worship aids are used for one cycle and then discarded. Others are purchased but seldom if ever used. These volumes deserve to be on your shelf of frequently used resources; that’s where I keep mine!”

Praying the word in season

Lift Up Your Hearts: Years A, B, and C.
Eucharistic Prayers based on the Revised Common Lectionary

Michael J. O’Donnell, O.S.L.

From the publication of The Sacrament of the Lord’s Supper: An Alternate Text (1972) through the production of the United Methodist Book of Worship, a renewal has been taking place in Christian worship. More congregations are experiencing the fulness of experience available to them by uniting the Word read and preached and the Word enfleshed in the eucharist. The original series Lift Up Your Hearts has had several years of use in over eight hundred congregations. With the advent of the Revised Common Lectionary this revised and expanded series now offers prayers of Great Thanksgiving for every Sunday and special day of the year. Each movement of the prayer recounts images found in the lessons for the occasion, making clear the connection between what has been heard and what is being celebrated.

In all there are seventy-two prayers for seventy-two possible services throughout each year of the lectionary cycle.

MICHAEL J. O’DONNELL, O.S.L., former Abbot of the Order of Saint Luke, founding editor of Sacramental Life, retired United Methodist clergy.

The book which helped give birth to a church

John Wesley’s Prayer Book:
The Sunday Service of the Methodists in North America

with Introduction, Notes and Commentary by James F. White

Here, for the first time in this century, is the full resource of Mr. Wesley’s Sunday Service of the Methodists in North America.

Sent to the growing Methodist Societies in the United States in 1784, it was the product of John Wesley’s careful abridgement of the Book of Common Prayer, intended to serve as a guide for the ordering of worship for what was to become the first American church. It is truly John Wesley’s prayer book and his gift to the people now known as United Methodist.

Included in this facsimile reproduction is the collection of Collects for each Sunday of the year, the complete lectionary and Wesley’s A Collection of Psalms and Hymns, which was bound into the original volume.

Dr. White’s exhaustive treatment of this landmark document helps the reader to gain a sense of the church’s life and worship in the eighteenth century and how it has helped to form the church of today.

“I congratulate (Dr. White) for the concise, clear and informative notes and commentary”
—CARLTON R. YOUNG Editor, The United Methodist Hymnal

JAMES F. WHITE was a prolific and well-loved author. His titles included Introduction to Christian Worship, The Sacraments as God’s Self-Giving, and New Handbook of the Christian Year

Church Architecture:
Building and Renovating for Christian Worship

James F. White
Susan J. White

A classic volume from the time of its first edition over a decade ago, Church Architecture has become an indispensible reference for congregations planning to build or renew their church facilities.

This new edition takes into account elements which have become prominent in recent times including the use of visuals, electronic instruments, and the need for flexible space to accomodate the various configurations and multiple uses to which church space is put.

“This should be required reading for anyone with responsibilities for building or renovating a Christian church. Whatever else you read, read this. A wealth of practical help is here, much of which whould be difficult or impossible to find anywhere else.”
—HOYT L. HICKMAN North American Academy of Liturgy

“The greatest gift an architect can bring is the ability to listen to the people of the church, to interpret their vision, and then bring it to reality in a structure which is pleasing to God and humanity. This book sharpens those listening skills and belongs on every architect’s bookshelf.”
—JAMES D. EVANS, Architect
