The best treatment of the doctrines which shaped a revival.

The Eucharistic Hymns of John and Charles Wesley

J. Ernest Rattenbury
Second American Edition
Introduction by Don E. Saliers, O.S.L.

Here is the classic text in an all-new edition which explores the treasury of Wesleyan theology as expressed in the hymns of those “enthusiasts” of the eighteenth century. The original, out of print since 1948, has been edited for generous language, usage and style for the modern reader. Included with the text is Brevint’s The Christian Sacrament and Sacrifice, as well as the complete (unedited) Hymns on the Lord’s Supper, originally published by the Wesleys in 1745.

Using as primary source documents the 166 hymns written by John and Charles, the author's extracts and exploration of the texts lay out for the reader “the true Methodist doctrines” as no other volume has done before or since. “It should never be forgotten that these hymns were revival hymns, and that Sacramental worship was not only not contrary to Evangelical, but was . . . one of its chief results.” (p. 15)

“Wherever there are evangelicals who are not sacramentalists, and wherever there are sacramentalists who are not evangelicals, the message of this book needs to be considered.”
— RELIGION IN LIFE

J. ERNEST RATTENBURY was a noted practical thologian and English cleric, best known for his Fernley-Hartley lectures. He also authored The Conversion of the Wesleys, The Evangelical Doctrine of Charles Wesley’s Hymns, Wesley’s Legacy to the World, and Vital Elements of Public Worship.

Making hymns and history come alive

My Great Redeemer’s Praise:
An introduction to Christian hymns

Carlton R. Young

The foremost church music editor of this century presents a comprehensive survey of ecumenical hymnody from its Hebrew roots to the present.

Building upon his earlier work, Dr. Young explores the journey taken by the Church in developing its repertoire for the ordering and expansion of worship.

As editor of the Methodist Hymnal (1964) and The United Methodist Hymnal: Book of United Methodist Worship (1989), as well as author of The Companion to the United Methodist Hymnal (1993), he is uniquely qualified to lead the reader into living history.

My Great Redeemer’s Praise is written for church musicians, pastors and other worship leaders, church school classes, college and seminary students. Carlton Young’s clear — and entertaining — style make this a volume which will enhance the library of anyone who loves the music of the Church.

“Once again we encounter Carlton Young, hymnic historian supreme in his witty, articulate way, looking carefully through American congregational song’s past into its present puzzling transition and perceptively into the future’s possible solutions. I find him here at his readible best.”

Worship Resources Based on the Revised Common Lectionary

And Also With You: Years A, B, and C

Timothy J. Crouch, O.S.L.,
Nancy Bryan Crouch, O.S.L.,
Chris E. Visminas, and
Mark R. Babb, O.S.L.

Born out of the frustration of trying to juggle multiple resources for liturgical planning, this book brings together all the basic elements for ensuring continuity and thematic wholeness to the worship of the congregation each week and holy day.

Based on the Revised Common Lectionary (1992), each volume contains resources for 72 possible services for the liturgical year. Each service’s section includes a summary of the lessons and the psalm. Propers include a Greeting, Collect and General Prayer for the Day which lift up the themes of the texts. Also, an antiphon based on a familiar hymn tune is provided.

The collection is completed by a piece of original line art which illustrates the gospel theme for the day. Copyright permission is given to reproduce the art as a bulletin cover and to include the psalm response in the bulletin. Templates are provided to assist in laying out the weekly service for copy machine.

“Some worship aids are used for one cycle and then discarded. Others are purchased but seldom if ever used. These volumes deserve to be on your shelf of frequently used resources; that’s where I keep mine!”
— DWIGHT W. VOGEL Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary
